Waiting on Wednesday: Heartstone by Elle Katharine White

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine.  Every Wednesday we get to highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to.  My book this week is : Heartstone by Elle Katharine White.

heartstoneA debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms

They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters.

Passionate, headstrong Aliza Bentaine knows this all too well; she’s already lost one sister to the invading gryphons. So when Lord Merybourne hires a band of Riders to hunt down the horde, Aliza is relieved her home will soon be safe again.

Her relief is short-lived. With the arrival of the haughty and handsome dragonrider, Alastair Daired, Aliza expects a battle; what she doesn’t expect is a romantic clash of wills, pitting words and wit against the pride of an ancient house. Nor does she anticipate the mystery that follows them from Merybourne Manor, its roots running deep as the foundations of the kingdom itself, where something old and dreadful slumbers . . . something far more sinister than gryphons.

It’s a war Aliza is ill-prepared to wage, on a battlefield she’s never known before: one spanning kingdoms, class lines, and the curious nature of her own heart.

Elle Katharine White infuses elements of Austen’s beloved novel with her own brand of magic, crafting a modern epic fantasy that conjures a familiar yet wondrously unique new world.

Due January 2017

Jane Austen, Wyverns, Warriors – oh hell yes, get in my life!

Ooo- what AM I saying??? I’m behind my reading schedule AND I have stacked up some awesome reads I haven’t had the pleasure of tucking into. I NEED to stop acquiring/lusting after more books! And then… and then… there’s this pretty cover and a really great premise… *sigh* I’ll just have to read your review when you get around to it! Enjoy…

Pride and Prejudice and dragons (and wyverns, I guess, but I’m not overtly attached to the taxonomy of legendary creatures)?! I’m sold.

I’m on the fence about this one. It sounds like it could be a great read, but I get a little tired of remakes/retellings. Might wait for a review or two first.

I know where you’re coming from and this particular classic does seem prime fodder for retellings but I can’t resist it!

I saw this one a while ago and have been patiently (OK, maybe not-so-patiently) waiting for it. Nice choice!

I can’t wait as well – patience may be a virtue but it’s an overrated one!

Dragons ins a Jane Austen setting are too powerful a lure to be ignored! 🙂

I’m actually not a huge fan of retellings like this but this one may be an exception- it looks very interesting and I love that cover. I can see giving this one a shot… plus I like the variety of creatures. Wyverns, lindworms…

  9. Lisa (@TenaciousReader)

Oh, yes!! I love the cover, plus Jane Austen plus dragons?? Yep. I am full of wants.
