Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme being hosted by Books by Proxy .   This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers.  The rules are fairly simple and can be found here.  Each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite.  Simples.   This week the theme is:

Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate

A cover which features a gate or gates

I actually found this tougher than I expected – it seemed at one point that I was constantly reading books with gates on the cover but when I looked at my list I think most of them were ‘pre blog’ so I couldn’t find the titles!  Anyway, I went for a classic this week: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett – and wow – there are a lot of covers for this one – I’ve restricted myself to about a tenth of the available ones out there!

It was certainly difficult to choose a favourite from this lot but I’m going to have to go for No.10, No rational reason but I like the style:

I loved this book! So many covers – I think I had the Apple Classics cover when I was a girl. Thanks for sharing these!

    • @lynnsbooks

I loved it too – I should probably have a reread as it was a good while ago since I first picked it up.

Same here and what’s funny is that I just re-shelved The Secret Garden yesterday (at my library job), so your post caught my eye!

  2. Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

That’s alot of covers! Think I posted 8 once and you have bested that. 😊

I have to say as it was your idea, part of me is glad you found it harder than expected as it means I wasn’t alone! I had a nightmare with this one! 😥 I’m sure there’s countless books with gates on but I couldn’t remember or think of any, mine is a very loose example of a gate, it’s a gateway and a bit of a cop out to be honest as it’s more a doorway, I really struggled! 😂

    • @lynnsbooks

Drew – I really struggled – I thought to myself what a fool – I should have gone and picked a book first and then come up with the theme! Still, it did take me a while but eventually I hit on this one. I know that I have a couple of others though but I just couldn’t think of the titles.
      Lynn 😀

It was a great theme, even though it was a nightmare, I guess it was karma paying me back for last week as I was reading a book which had a lady in red on the cover for that one. 😊

Sorry to ask, but do you know the theme for next week?

      • @lynnsbooks

Was thinking we could submit some more themes to BooksbyProxy to populate her upcoming thread? What do you think?? Maybe I could email some through to you and Sarah so that we all come up with different ideas?

      • Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

Ah, just read your comment on my face-off post. Yes, that’s a great idea. 😊

      • @lynnsbooks

        Great. Let’s do that then.

  3. Tammy

I think I like 1 and 2 the best…great idea for this week’s theme! I didn’t realize there were so many covers out there!

    • @lynnsbooks

It’s a very popular classic this one so there’s probably a 100 covers out there if you search hard enough! I thought 12 was quite enough and I was going for variety – some of them are just small changes or slightly different colour themes.
      Lynn 😀

  4. F. R. Dorrian

I remember seeing a really old TV film of this when I was a kid in school, always meant to check the book out, it was a favourite of my dad’s

  5. Carmen

Wow, you were right about the amount of covers! I like 2 the best.

    • @lynnsbooks

That’s Tammy’s favourite too. They’re all nice covers really.
      Lynn 😀

  6. Bookwraiths

You can’t go wrong with any of these covers. They all are beautiful in different ways.

    • @lynnsbooks

They are all lovely – so many for this book – I just had to draw a line under it otherwise I think I would have been still posting!
      Lynn 😀

  7. maddalena@spaceandsorcery

I love the fourth from the top: there’s an air of mystery and… expectation in that image that keeps drawing my attention to it.

    • @lynnsbooks

I think all of these covers have something about them that will appeal – it’s a classic novel of course so it has an absolute multitude of covers and I could have gone on and on!
      Lynn 😀

  8. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

Such an explosion of green and life on these covers! I really can’t choose, I love them all 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks

They are all lovely – especially when pulled together like this.
      Lynn 😀

  9. sjhigbee

What a fantastic choice, Lynn:)). I have a special affection for this book, as I remember my granny reading it to me when I was a little girl. My favourite cover is the fifth from the top – they all have something to offer, but I particularly like that one as it has exactly caught the period and was how I envisage Mary Lennox actually looking…

    • @lynnsbooks

This actually turned into a very good, and almost flukey, choice. I had no idea there were so many covers, although I suppose I should have known with it being a classic.
      Lynn 😀

      • sjhigbee

It was a fabulous choice:). If I were you I’d claim it was completely delibrate!

I’ve been giving my Friday Face-off suggestions some thought and have come up with the following three ideas – a cover where there is blood, a cover featuring the moon and a cover with some form of luggage… If you were going to suggest anything along those same lines, let me know and I can tweak them before forwarding them on to Proxy.

    • @lynnsbooks

Sorry Sarah, only just getting round to my comments – your suggestions are brilliant. I haven’t chosen three yet but I’ll make sure I don’t overlap with yours and Drew’s.
      Lynn 😀

  11. Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

Sarah commented on my own Face-Off post with her theme ideas, I thought they were all really good ideas. I’ve sent my theme ideas to Proxy this afternoon but thought I’d let you know what themes I suggested to as I sent them to Sarah to get her opinion.

    Mine theme suggestions are:

`1-Shrouded in black, in morals I do lack – A cover featuring a character wearing a hood or cowl.
2-I sit here looking out at all I own – A cover featuring a throne.
    3-A bouquet for you m’lady. A cover featuring a flower/flowers.

    • @lynnsbooks

Thanks Drew – I’m going to send something over too – I’ll let you know what they are too.
      Lynn 😀

  12. Sunday Post – 24th July | Brainfluff

[…] was nailed by Lynn’s wonderful selection of covers for the children’s classic The Secret Garden https://lynns-books.com/2016/07/22/i-am-the-keymaster-are-you-the-gatekeeper/ Check this out if you fancy a delightful stroll down memory […]

  13. jessicabookworm

Great book choice – I adore The Secret Garden 🙂 I can certainly sympathise with how hard it must have been to pick a favourite cover from this lovely selection. I have quite a few lovely Vintage and Collins editions of classics so #1 or #4 would happily fit into my bookcase.

    • @lynnsbooks

There are some beautiful covers – I’ve barely scratched the surface here!
      Lynn 😀
