Every Tuesday over at the The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. The topic this week is a freebie and as we are still in the realms of Vintage Sci Fi (over at the Little Red Reviewer) and the 2016 Sci Fi Experience (over at Stainless Steel Droppings) I’m giving my top 10 sci fi recommendations – new and vintage:
- The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- I am Legend by Richard Matheson
- Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
- Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
- Dune by Frank Herbert
- The Martian by Andy Weir
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown
- Wool by Hugh Howie

I am not fond of sci-fi’s but I heard that The Martian is really a great read. Coming from you, I guess it really is. 🙂
Thank you for sharing this, Lynn!
Sci fi isn’t my comfort zone either which is why I try to make myself read a little. The Martian has got a wonderfully humourous streak that’s so entertaining.
Lynn 😀
OOhh! You make me want to read it, too! 😀
Good list! I’m yet to read a couple of these, but they’re all on TBR.
Our TBR’s are not getting any smaller are they!
Lynn 😀
Sci-fi lists are my all time favourite! I’m always looking for new sci-fi to get into. Thanks for this! 🙂 – ashley
Cool – I hope there was maybe one or two on there that you haven’t read but like the look of.
Lynn 😀
I wasn’t a fan of the Silo series, but… The Martian was awesome 🙂 SO was Fahrenheit 451! And I’ve only read the first Hitchhiker’s, but I adored it. I am Legend is on my list of “Must read Soons” but Ready Player One did not enthuse me at all. My TTT
I’ve only read the first two – I really enjoyed Wool. The Martian was much better than I ever thought it would be and Fahrenheit 451. Ready Player One was such a novelty for me – I kept looking askance at it and really not wanting to read it – I was so surprised by all the gaming and film references that it just really grabbed me.
Lynn 😀
I don’t mind gaming references, but when it feels like he literally hit up Wikipedia so he could list every possible movie, game, etc, and does them one right after another…that’s where I get twitchy.
I’ve only read 3 books mentionned here but I am really interested by Dune, Fahrenheit 451, Flowers for Algernon and Wool (because my dad is a huge fan of this trilogy) 🙂
I haven’t finished the series yet – I thought the first book was really good and I can see why your dad would be a fan. I think my dad would be as well. Flowers for Algernon is another great book – well, all the ones on this list are good (well, obviously I think so!) but Flowers for Algernon is really very thought provoking.
Lynn 😀
Yay sci-fi!! Still a couple books here I need to read – I can’t believe I still haven’t got around to Red Rising and Ready Player One.
The Red Rising series is so good – and Ready Player One. I hope you find time for them both.
Lynn 😀
I’ll get The Martian in book form since I really liked the film.
I liked the film – and, probably unsurprisingly, thought the book was even better!
Lynn 😀
Great Top 10, I think I am going to pick up Ready Player One in the near future. I devoured Red Rising by Pierce Brown earlier this month, I bought Golden Son last week and plan on reading it next.
Ohh, Golden Son is so good and the third is due out any minute!!! So exciting.
Lynn 😀
I hope you enjoy it – I loved all the references – please stop by and drop me a link I’d like to catch your thoughts.
Lynn 😀
I really really really want to read The Martian. I’m number 52 on the waitlist at the library :(.
Ohh, that’s a long wait isn’t it! Still, the anticipation will be intense by the time you pick it up 😀
The Martian and Ready Player One, of course of course 🙂 And speaking of Red Rising, release date to book 3 is drawing closer and closer, time to start the countdown 🙂
I know – I keep trying to not think of it!! But SOON.
Lynn 😀
Hey! i\ve read 7 of these (all but numbers 1, 4 and 10)! I’m impressed with myself as I never feel like I read much SF.
Yeah, I don’t read much sci fi either – I’m trying to increase it little by little though. 7 – excellent. I think you would like Day of the Triffids. Well, I liked the other two as well but Hitchhiker’s Guide is very humorous and I think you don’t always enjoy those books as much.
Lynn 😀
I loved loved loved The Martian and recommend that one a lot, as well. That is actually the only book on your list that I have read. However, out all the book you’ve listed, I would want to read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy the most! (And I do own a copy of it) 🙂
Ohh, you need to read it. It’s such a good book. I don’t think I know anybody who hasn’t read it – course everyone will come out of the woodwork now and tell me how horrible it is!
Seriously, I hope you enjoy it and look forward to your review.
Lynn 😀
[…] Ten Good Science Fiction @ Anthony Biondi | Must Read Sci-Fi @ Lynn’s Book […]
Dune leaped right on top of my TBR list. I don’t even know what it’s about but the cover looks really creepy. I may need to read that book some time this month. Badly.
Well, if you like sci fi you’ll probably love it. It has a very strong following and is pretty much always on the ‘must read’ lists. That cover is awesome though!
Lynn 😀
A first-classic!
I love The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Fahrenheit 451 and Day of the Triffids; and I am hoping to read The Martian soon.
I think you would enjoy The Martian – it has a wonderful sense of humour and it’s also quite gripping as the story progresses.
Lynn 😀
I’ll definitely have to look these up! Sci-fi isn’t my strongest genre, but if it’s written well, I generally tend to enjoy them. 🙂

That’s me too to be honest. I push myself to read more sci fi – fantasy is my first love.
Lynn 😀
Same! 🙂 Sci-fi can be really good sometimes, though. I definitely push myself as well.
Yeah, it’s good to step outside your comfort zone sometimes.
Lynn 😀
Absolutely! 🙂
