This week over at the Fantasy Review Barn Nathan is once again taking us tough travelling through the tropes of fantasy. This week the topic is : ENFORCERS
‘Some people are made to give orders; others are made to make sure they are carried out. Be it through muscle or guile there are just some people you don’t want to hear are looking for you.’

Okay, I had fun with this one:
- Vampire: Prudence from M L Brennan’s Generation V. She’s the actual muscle of the family and believe me you won’t want her on your case!
- Shapeshifters: Ezekiel from Rachel Neumeier’s Black Dog. Ezekiel, appointed executioner for the Dimiloc pack who are responsible for keeping control of lone, stray weres.
- Human: Max Gladstone’s Three Parts Dead. Cat is a Black Suit – enforcing the law within the City of Alt-Coulumb. Black suits are linked to Justice and become possessed with her spirit endowing extra strength and speed during their duties.
- Rabbits: Bigwig – an officer of the Owsla from Richard Adam’s Watership Down.
- Wolves: minions of the White Witch enforcing her rule over the other critters within the world CS Lewis’s Lion, Witch and Wardrobe
- Wizards: The White Council as found in Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. They ‘police’ the wizarding world – stepping across the boundaries laid down by the Council can result in death – so, you know, quite serious really.
- Jean Tannen – brute force and the Sisters help him to keep people in line! Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastards – never miss an opportunity get Jean on your list – that’s what I always say 😀
- Buffy!

‘It can’t be reasoned with, it can’t be bargained with. It doesn’t feel pity of remorse or fear and it absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead.’

Cool decision picking the different species 🙂 And I see Jean is of a species of his own? So true. I hate to think of him as an enforcer because he’s so sweet, but he fits the profile.
Jean is definitely one of a kind. I love him I really do. I know what you mean about thinking of him as an enforcer but I just can’t resist putting him on my lists.
Lynn 😀
Buffy! 🙂
😀 😀
AHHHHHH. I couldn’t find female authors and I pull a blank on my favorite character discovered last year? How did I miss Prudence?
I declare a mistrial, we have to do this again next week.
I thought for sure you would have Prudence! Yes, let’s do it all again next week. 😀
Lynn
Fun list… M L Brennan and Rachel Neumeier are both on my Authors to Read list this year, I’ll have to check out those books!
Who does Buffy enforce for? The forces of goodness I suppose! 🙂
Absolutely – the forces of goodness – think of how overrun the place would be with vampires without her! Haha, you just have to add Buffy if you get the opportunity.
Lynn 😀
Bahaha so true. Thank goodness for Buffy!
I love that you featured the wolves from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I thought at first this was a hard topic but have now thought of the gunslingers from Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. I was also wondering if Aurors from Harry Potter count as they have to catch dark wizards? 🙂
I was trying to think of something for Harry Potter but gave up – well done!
Lynn 😀
BUFFY!
Nope, needs no explanation at all there! Excellent choice with the White Council from the Dresden Files.
I quite enjoyed this one I must admit.
Lynn 😀
As mentioned already, great twist on the theme with the different species of enforcers. Hadn’t thought of the White Council wizards as enforcers until I saw them on your list, but they do completely fit.
Thanks – I didn’t have to do any creative thinking (cheating) this week.
Lynn 😀
Prudence Scott: that’s exactly the kind of person you don’t want to find on your path, or on your tracks… Or wherever! Brrrrrr….. 🙂
Or with her teeth in your neck. Yeah, I would have the goosebumps if Prudence was on my case.
Lynn 😀
What about dementors? I think they classify as enforcers as well?
Yes! Dementors, totally count, thanks 😀
I like that you had all sorts of different. I wish I had thought of Maugrim from Narnia – he’s a great one! And I’m with Kaja about Jean – he did cross my mind but I couldn’t think of him as subservient to Locke though he is, in fact, Locke’s heavy.
I must admit I never think of Jean as being subservient – I kind of think of them as equals but with different roles! Jean is definitely my favourite though so there is that…
I had a really weird dream that Bigwig any Captain Holly tried to recruit me for the Owsla. *obligatory Watership Down chill*
ahahahahah roflmao!
I thought it was so funny having a list of enforcers with a rabbit on it.
Lynn 😀
Nice inclusion of Watership Down. For some reason, the idea of a rabbit brute enforcer amuses me. I enjoyed it when I read it too 😛
I know – it totally made me laugh out loud.
I love that both Jean and Buffy get their very own categories 😀
They totally deserve their own – Jean and Buffy rule!
Lynn 😀
“Never miss an opportunity to get Jean on your list” – wise words to live by. 😀
yes, they are! I love Jean – he’s the man.
Lynn 😀
Heck yes Prudence is a good one, heck all of your picks were good. That must have been a fun one to come up with examples for. Rabbits hah
yeah, I enjoyed it and it just really tickled me putting rabbits on an enforcer list.
Lynn 😀
Ooooh I like how you broke this down by species! I never would have thought of Cat as an enforcer, but you’re totally right. Girl brings down a lot of people in the service of Justice!
Yeah – a really good character. And, I loved the development at the end.
I haven’t read Watership Down in years and years. Bigwig was always my favourite.
You have to love Bigwig! He’s a brute with a big curly head of hair!
Lynn 😀
Terminator is my cyborg baby. I love that you have the T-800 on your list! And Robocop too!
Such a lot of great quotes out of both of those films – I just can’t resist.
Lynn 😀
