He’s not the messiah, he’s a very naughty boy!

This week over at the Fantasy Review Barn we will be travelling once again through the tropes of fantasy looking at: MESSIAHS

If the world needs saving who are you going to call?  Perhaps there is someone out there destined to save everything?  It sounds like you need…a Messiah.

The Painted Man series by Peter Brett, The Deliverer – identity not yet known.

The Once and Future King – I feel a bit of a cheat because I haven’t actually finished reading this book – but, Arthur!!

Chronicles of Narnia – the children – A prophecy says that four sons and daughters of Adam and Eve will come to Narnia and help Aslan… they did help to free Narnia from the evil clutches of the white witch!

Harry Potter by J K Rowling – oh yes!  I knew I would get Potter on this list.  The only person to survive an attack from you know who!

Bloodsong by Anthony Ryan – Vaelin – this is just a wild stab in the dark but he does kind of feel like somebody who is going to change things and save people!

The Legend of Ellie Quin by Alex Scarrow – this is sci fi rather than fantasy – but Ellie Quin is the main protagonist and the stories are retelling her history – she’s legendary and seems to have changed the world – although I don’t know quite how yet because the series is ongoing!

Guess the saviours from the two quotes below:

‘I didn’t come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin.’

‘I used to bull’s-eye womp rats in my T-16 back home’

Oh, the Narnia people are a good call. I don’t particularly like the series but I agree, they’re the saviors of that whole land.
I also picked Harry, he’s popular this week 🙂

Yeah, I think Harry is on every list – followed closely by Katniss!

I have no idea who the first quote is. I will however be able to tell you my true friends by those who know or don’t know the second one. I assume anyone who doesn’t can be declared legally dead.

The first quote is from Neo. Let’s see who doesn’t know the quote then!!!!!

Slightly unrelated, but I love the cover you picked out for The Once & Future King. I think that’s the nicest version I’ve seen of it.

Good call on Narnia! I’d say that along with the Pevensie kids you could also add Aslan – he is basically lion Jesus after all, haha. I’m shocked you didn’t try to weasel LOTR in there!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

haha, lion Jesus! Aslan is pretty lovely! I thought about LoTR but you know, I was going to put Aragorn and then thought is he really the right character. So I hummed and ahhed about it but decided not!
      And you got Tamora again!

If the world needs saving, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters!

Or do they just handle strange things in your neighbourhood?

I could cheat and Google the quotes but I’ll have a guess of the bottom one: Luke Skywalker.

Yeah – and Matrix. I wanted to put ‘dodge this’ but that’s not Neo!

Yes! Vaelin definitely has the feel for a Messiah in the making! Great picks!

Yeah, I just like Vaelin so I wasn’t sure he fit but I thought what the hell!

Yay for King Arthur and the Pevensies! The Ellie Quinn series looks intriguing – is it any good?

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I actually really enjoy it – it’s very easy sci fi – that’s my way of describing if anyway – so it’s perfect for me!

Hmm, count me in as another commenter intrigued about Ellie Quinn. I’m completely unfamiliar with it and haven’t even heard of it until today. What kind of sci-fi is it? Futuristic? YA? Very curious.

It’s very readable and enjoyable tbh – but that’s taken from somebody who sort of skirts around the periphery of sci fi and isn’t hardcore. It’s very easy to read, fun and intriguing. Set on another planet way in the future Ellie is unusual but we don’t know why. She has the urge to travel. She moves to the big city. However, – those in control know of her and are hunting her down (even though she is oblivious). It’s just good fun – almost starwarsish! I like it – but, like I said, my sci-fi is minimal. The other plus is they’re all fairly short books – probably 200 pages max and they’re not expensive. I’m just picking them up as they come out. No new ones yet though! The last one was very good and I need to find out what happens next!
