Death is only the beginning!

Every week a whole bunch of us go trekking through the tropes of fantasy with Nathan over at the Fantasy Review Barn as part of Tough Travelling.  This week the topic for discussion is HIGH PRIESTS

HIGH PRIEST is nearly always evil, either on his own account or on behalf of the dark lord.

Well – I’ve had a melt down this week!  I’ve left it too late and then couldn’t think of any high priests – I thought of a couple of high priestesses and a movie high priest so I’ve gone with these.  Basically, I did worse than ever!  I’ll go and sit in the naughty corner for a week and hopefully come up with something better for next week’s topic!

Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist – Silverthorn – has a high priestess character who brings two characters back from the dead in order to interrogate them.

Priests and Priestesses of Naamah from Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey – not really baddies though!

Catarina from Teresa Frohock’s Miserere – High Priestess to the Fallen Angel – defo a baddie.

Imhotep – film character – definitely a high priest and not a very nice man!

We re-watch the first two mummy movies in my house every year. They are just a whole lot of fun. Course they are already remaking them so I expect those memories to die horrible deaths.

I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve watch those films – I could probably quote half the film with no problem! Oh no – remakes!! Why? Just why??
      tsk

Im due a Mummy re-watch. And yes, i totally agree with Nathan. THEY ARE DOOMED!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

No, I love the mummy films!! I’m going to be obstinate and like them better than the remakes!! (easy to say now I suppose!)

There is only one Mummy film you have ever need and that is the 1932 version.

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

        Is that the Karloff film??

      • romeorites's avatar romeorites

        It certainly is 🙂

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah, I watched a load of these old B&W films – I love em! Maybe that makes me a bit weird. Wasn’t there one with the wolf man and frankenstein??

      • romeorites's avatar romeorites

Nope not weird at all, both myself and Kat love the ol’ horror films, and old Sci-Fi films. They have a perfect charm to them, and although sometimes you can see the zipper, they do stand the test of time. Yes there was a Wolfman and Frankenstein

Some people don’t understand you watching old movies – I like the sense of atmosphere. No special effects to speak of and, yes, you could see the wires and other flaws – but some of them are so good!

I think there is something about them that is honest and raw, and they dont pretend to be something else.

Also, your blog is all pretty and snowy, Lynn! 🙂

I wouldn’t be so hard on yourself, I think this is a really hard topic. I can’t think of anything I’ve read with a high priest in. I love your choice of Imhotep. I love The Mummy I recognised the quote in your title straight away 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yes! Everyone loves the Mummy – I love it when we’re all in harmony! That was a total cheat of course – I just couldn’t come up with anything!
      Lynn 😀

Yes Imhotep very bad nasty fellow. But all for loveeeee lol

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Indeed – he was just a big soppy romantic!! LOL
There just isn’t enough time for everything is there!! We need a time machine.

No you should congratulate yourself for all the times you managed to do these lists. I’m so terrible at planning ahead!

I didn’t think of Riftwar, must be I didn’t read far enough. It’s nice to see some high priests that aren’t evil. lol good job remembering Imhotep! I always liked him.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah, – I mean he was only trying to resurrect the love of his life!
      Lynn 😀

It was really hard this week. Though I can’t believe I forgot Kushiel. What is Age of Iron to you is Kushiel’s Dart to me for this theme, I mean, that series is full of priests and priestesses to all the Terre D’Ange gods! I can’t believe I didn’t clue in!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Well there you go – you forgot Kushiel and I forgot Age of Iron! I couldn’t believe I forgot Age of Iron – I only just read it a few months ago!!!!! What the hell is wrong with my brain.

What is it with priests and being evil? I dunno, seems like there’s a disproportionate number of ’em. Imhotep is the #1 perfect choice. What a gruesome image of him…eugh.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I know! Really? What is it with priests? Imhotep is a great character.
      Lynn 😀

Imhotep is a great evil high priest! Also, I thought of some of the first Dungeons & Dragons books – Rastlin? It’s been a decade or more since I read the books.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Dungeons and Dragons – I’ve never read them so Rastlin sounds bang on to me!
      Lynn 😀
