Every week a whole bunch of us go trekking through the tropes of fantasy with Nathan over at the Fantasy Review Barn as part of Tough Travelling.  This week the topic for discussion is MISSING HEIRS

MISSING HEIRS occur with great frequency. At any given time, half the countries in Fantasyland will have mislaid their crown princess/prince.

So, without further ado I’m going to jump right in – although, this week, I’m not actually naming the missing people – because that could just be considered a bit spoilery for those who haven’t read the stories below!  I’m just going to name the books and you’ll have to trust me (Don’t forget to go and check out the others – there are always loads of great recommendations to be had)!  Unfortunately this week the titles are all ones that I’ve picked before:

LotR – never miss an opportunity to get Tolkien on the list : the Heir of Isildur – okay I’ve named this particular heir but only because he’s known by a different name throughout most of the books.  And anyway, who doesn’t know the Heir of Isildur!

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie – this one defo counts!

The House of the Four Winds by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory – I’m not sure you could call this a missing heir – so much as a heir who goes travelling in cognito.

Age of Iron by Angus Watson – three companions and one of them with definitely a surprise in store for future readers out there.

Smiler’s Fair by Rebecca Levene – just check out the start of the story – definitely a missing heir in the making.

Stardust by Neil Gaiman – I’m thinking of a female, sometimes who takes the shape of a bird, who wears a chain that keeps her enslaved to a witch.

This is a cool list 🙂 I have Aragorn and Yarvi on mine, as well – and I’ve had The House of the Four Winds on my tentative tbr for a while now, because I’ve heard good things about it around the blogosphere.

Its a fun read for sure. I will pick up the next definitely.

I think the ban on LotR spoilers is no longer on the table. I am going to go ahead and reread Stardust one of these days; I really don’t remember that ship in the book, only in the movie. Maybe I am wrong.

Well. Ive already proved once already this week that my memory is useless but Im sure I remember the ship. lynn 😀

What day is it, Lynn? (Going for the camel commercial voice here.)

That’s right, Tough Traveling Thursday, where I get a whole list of books that I just have to read.

Thanks for your contributions to that list. 🙂

Great list. I would add Prince Rilian from The Silver Chair book six of The Chronicles of Narnia by C S Lewis. I always love to get some Narnia into these subjects 🙂

I knew that The Chronicles would have a contribution but I couldn’t add one as I only read the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I love to get in Lotr and HP – and quite often Narnia as well!

Would really like to read Half a King someday in the future! Stardust always makes me smile. 🙂

I do like Stardust – and was quite pleased with myself when it popped into my head.
Half a King is good and I do recommend it.

Stardust is a great one since the missing heir is a side character and not one we think too much on.

The One Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is a great one as it is told from the viewpoint of the missing heir.

And of course The Ice & Fire series by GRR Martin. So many heirs go missing, or are killed, or in hiding, etc.

I thought of the Jesmin book – and then forgot to put it on!! Nice one coming up with that.
George Martin is almost turning up on these lists as much as LoTR – if not more.

Oh dur, I forgot about Age of Iron! You’re right, I wavered over some of my choices too, wondering if the heir is actually missing or just incognito…I’d say bottom line it all counts 🙂

yeah, Age of Iron is a funny one – I nearly missed it!

LOTR is to you as Tamora Pierce is to me. 😉 My list also had Stardust on it, such a great book. The movie was really good too!

Yeah, I like the book and the movie of Stardust. I love the ‘greyed out’ prince ghosts!
