Just returned from a wonderful event being held at Waterstones in Manchester where Ben Aaronovitch came to talk this evening.

Wow, this guy is very easy to like.  He’s just incredibly easy going, laid back and amusing.  It’s easy to see why his books are so good.  He had no particular format to his evening.  He talked a little and then simply asked if we had any questions.  He was quite unashamed about his lack of pre-planning and I don’t blame him really as this way the event was very spontaneous.  There was no shortage of questions and the answers were informative, rambling, funny and sometimes unexpected.  We learnt a little ranging from architecture to jazz.  I’ve only read the first in the series so far and it was very good – I will be tucking into the second very soon.  Check out the covers – I think they’re rather excellent!

In other news!

I came home tonight to two rather lovely looking and totally different books which I’m really excited to read:

The Ice Twins by S K Tremayne (courtesy of Harper Collins)

And, I’m currently reading The City Stained Red by Sam Sykes and Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.

What you all up to??

I don’t have any cool events or author interactions to talk about, but I also started City Stained Red, though honestly am having a couple day hiatus from reading. Enjoy what I have read. 🙂

I sometimes think I should do that – my reading has been dreadful this month! I should every now and again take a little reading holiday, only, for like, a couple of days, but…

I definitely think the books get better as the series go on, but I think I’m in the minority there. I’m really looking forward to Foxglove Summer!

I need to get my reading freak on and seriously catch up! I take it therefore you’re all uptodate? And, I actually agree, I enjoyed the first one – but I did have a little dip and I’m not sure if that’s why it’s taken me a while! He’s a really lovely author – makes me want to go and just catch up with everything straight away!

Yeah, I’ve read everything but the new one! I really enjoyed them all, I think the last was my favorite. The story is getting really well developed and interesting!

I should definitely have kept up with them and I will certainly continue.

I think it will be next after I finish the next Robin Hobb book…

I’m crying here…I want Foxglove Summer, but not released in the US until January.

Hah, I didn’t realise – not long now though, it’s just going to fly by particularly now every store has their Christmas decorations up! It’s like we’re being thrown into Christmas whether we want to or not – not that I’m a grumpy, curmudgeonly humbug type or anything.

Yes, read Ann Leckie. I’m halfway through the sequel right now. She’s amazing.

I hope you enjoy your new books! I really like the sound of Ben Aaronovitch’s books but I haven’t read any yet.

yeah, I think you might enjoy his books – they’re good. Saying that, I’ve only read the first! I do intend to read them all though!!!

Wow, sounds like a great author event! Meeting an author in person can definitely increase my desire to read their books – honestly, I want to read Aaronovitch’s books at least twice as much now as I did before your post! 🙂 As for The Walled City…it’s my first DNF book since I started blogging. For some reason I thought it was going to have a small dystopian/sci-fi element to it and it didn’t by the 40% mark. I thought the writing left a lot to be desired. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!

Ahh, interesting – it’s going to be one of my reads soon. I must admit I was expecting some sort of dystopia myself – perhaps being forewarned not to expect that will be helpful. I hate it when I go into a book with certain expectations and they’re just not met but that’s more my problem than the book’s I suppose.
