The 64,000 dollar question…

If you were reading a book and as you were reading the events all started to seem vaguely familiar, until you realised the book was in fact your life story (to date and beyond) – would you continue to read to the end??

Somebody asked me this yesterday – my immediate answer was ‘no’ – tempting fate, don’t want to know, and, anyway, if you did know – wouldn’t you then try and make events fit around what you expected to happen, etc, etc, etc.

Upon more thoughtful deliberation – hell no!  That book would without a doubt be a DNF for me.  Let’s just be honest there are no dragons, sea monsters, witches, demons and vampires in my life!  This is a good thing of course, being a gigantic coward and all, let’s just keep them all separate – fact and fiction and never the twain shall meet.  To the point – when I’m reading I want my magical escape and unless some sort of rift in the time space continuum happens or somebody finds Middle Earth or dragons come mysteriously swooping out of the mountains one misty day – I’m not going to get my fix reading my own life story – don’t get me wrong, I love life, but I also love a bit of escapism.  There it is – in all its glorious truth.  Judge me if you will!!

And, would you read that book???????  And Why????

But if you read the book, you could maybe change your life for the better? Plus I’m a vampire 8)

hahah! What are you trying to say about my life hey? Are you really a vampire??? hee hee

Awesome question! I wouldn’t read it either. Some things are better left as mysteries:-)

  3. Steph's avatar stephswint

Absolutely not – I don’t want to know. I’d have to get rid of it immediately , however, because I would probably break in moments of weakness…

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah – you’d have to totally incinerate it – otherwise you’d be piecing it back together with sticky tape!
      Lynn 😀

I didn’t mean your life Lynn, I mean’t the royal you. I tthink I would read it, at least I’d know and could change it. Yes, I’m a vampire. Can’t you tell by the fact I’ve never aged since you first saw me and all these women fall at my feet… ahem, cough.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Well, those women will ‘fall’ at your feet if you drain them of blood – occasional hazard I guess!!
I always knew you were a vampire, it’s that whole ‘sparkling in the sunshine’ thing!

Hey hey! That’s the movie “Stranger Than Fiction” have you seen it? It’s the only movie where I actually like Will Farrell. You should watch it – he’s going about his life and then starts to hear this woman narrating everything he’s doing – and it’s actually some author who is writing his life (her thinking he’s just some fictional character she created but he actually exists) It’s such an awesome movie -omg and now I want to watch it.

I doubt I’d keep reading either.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

OMG – I think I have seen that movie ages ago. How strange is it somebody asking me that yesterday! Me and my friend in work totally disagreed. I was no, she was (obs) yes! And, now, I want to go and watch that film!!

Are you telling me you don’t like Anchorman? Its one of the few places I actual agree with the masses on popular entertainment.

And Lynn, I’d read a chapter ahead then quit =). Just to freak out my friends.

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I actually do love Anchorman! It’s got some immensely quotable scenes!!! I actually find Will Ferrell really funny, he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but he only has to pull his face and it makes me laugh!!
That’s not a bad idea – although, you might read that chapter and then become hooked – next thing, you’d be at the end of the book!!

Wow, what a great idea. Temptation would probably get the better of me and I would read it.

I know – I think I’d have to destroy it immediately – in a way that couldn’t be put back together, otherwise the temptation would be just too much!

Hell no! I like surprises…and feeling like I have some sort of control over what happens in my life. 😉

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah, that whole book of your life does kind of take away the control factor doesn’t it!
      Lynn 😀

That’s a tough question. My first response is I’d want a surprise but what if reading the book got you to do more interesting things? For example, someone who keeps to themselves may read the book and see what a boring life they have and then decide to take a random trip to somewhere exotic and go on an adventure!

That written, wouldn’t it be weird if your entire life was already mapped out! Maybe rebelling against that path would create all sorts of excitement and peril…

    Tough question!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I know – it’s a real dilemma, because would reading the book mean you could still change things. So, if you didn’t like the way you saw yourself could you alter your life’s course – a bit a la Scrooge??
I like the idea of ‘going on an adventure’ very Hobbitish!
      Lynn 😀

I’d be tempted to read it, but I don’t know what effect me reading beyond the present would have on the future and whether it would change it. And would the text of the book change if events changed in such a way that the result would be a different future? The very existence of that knowledge could lead to some interesting philosophical questions and/or time travel conundrums.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Actually – it could make a good story for a book – I know that something similar has been done but I think it could be done in a different way!!!
      Lynn 😀

This question kind of reminds me of a scene in the last Magician’s trilogy book by Lev Grossman. The characters go to a magical library with all the books that have ever been written and on one shelf is a book for each person that tells his or her life. If it were me I’d probably not pick it up, not even to peek. Though I do hope it’s a big long and heavy tome 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah – nice one! I guess if it was a fairly slim volume you’d have something to worry about! Tabitha mentioned the film that Will Ferrell starred in which was based on a similar story – I think I’ve seen some of it but can’t remember how it ends!! I might have to go and find a copy of that and see what it’s all about.
      Lynn 😀

I wouldn’t read that book. I don’t need to know what will happen to me. I’ve got my life to find that out.
