Tough Travel – ‘I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog too’
Yep, this week over at the Fantasy Review Barn we are looking at ‘witches’
My list, as last week will be very simple as I have limited access to gadgetry and wifi. Therefore without further ado my witches brew are as follows:
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. The Witch of the Waste who turns the young girl in this story into an old lady.
Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series which probably doesn’t need any intro. Great fun and loads of witches to choose from.
Ronald Dahl’s Witches. Such an excellent story. Just read it and find out for yourself.
The Godless by Ben Peek. Not a major role in the book but there is a witch in the story. She even has a head kept alive in a jar that she reanimates using blood magic!
The Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence. The witch whose spell binds Jalan and Snorri together at the start of their unforgettable adventure.
Honourable Mentions
The Witch king of Angmar. Couldn’t leave out LotR
And, also couldn’t leave out Harry Potter. So many witches you can’t chuck a stick without getting turned into a toad!

Oh, I saw the Witches movie from the Roald Dahl book as a kid, and was really afraid of that head witch!
Such a good film!
Lynn 😀
I’d add the Witches of East End (haven’t read the book but I’m judging it by the title lol) to the list. 😉
Happy reading 😀
The Witch of the Waste is a perfect choice! I actually saw the movie adaptation of Howl’s Moving Castle before I read the book so whenever the Witch was mentioned in print form all I could picture was her melting grossness from the film, haha. I hope you’re having a wonderful time on your travels!
I had a lovely time thanks.
I also saw that movie and kept picturing the witch – with a massive oversized head!
Lynn 😀
Tiffany Aching is the best witch ever! There’s a group of witches in Cat Valente’s The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland… that are rather unusual. They make soups and stews.
I immediately thought of the Witches by Roald Dahl too. I would also pick the white witch from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe because I love to get a bit of Narnia into these topics. And I’d also pick the wicked and good witches from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum 🙂
Haha, I also had The Wizard of Oz and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe on my list – but I had to shave some off this week otherwise it was going to turn into a dissertation!
Lynn 😀
Roald Dahl’s The Witches! His books were such a huge part of my childhood, it’s a pity I’ve forgotten a lot of the stories. I had considered putting The Witches on my list as well but couldn’t figure out how to make it count if I couldn’t remember anything from it 😛
Haha, well I never let my memory loss prevent me from adding a book – that’s the useful thing of reviewing – you can go back and check what you think of a book but in this case Witches was well before my blogging days!
Lynn 😀
I’ve read none of these. But my kids have The Witches and have both read it. 🙂 And, actually I did read enough of Prince of Fools to get to the part where they are bound. 🙂 But, ummm… all of that is lost with HEAD IN A JAR WITCH!!
Yes – having a head in a jar is pretty distracting – I also forgot to mention the body was still kept somewhere close to hand! And could also be reanimated – gross!
Lynn 😀
