photo 2-5So, we’ve just been to Amsterdam to chill out for a few days.  The weather was lovely – although there was one day of rain which could put Manchester’s rainy days to shame – literally it must have downpoured none stop for about four hours!  We were forced to find shelter in a cafe with a few drinks until the rain called quits (it’s a dirty job but someone has to do it!)

Amsterdam is a very attractive city with a fantastic network of canals and tree lined streets.  We had a great time strolling round and lazily checking out all the different styles of buildings.  We visited a few museums and took an obligatory barge ride.  Given my book geekery I’m sharing with you a couple of literature related pics.

A library – in the middle of the Rijksmuseum – of course you can’t actually get around this – it’s all protected but you can just stand and stare at all the books longingly!  and check out the spiral staircase.

The picture on the right was also from the Rijksmuseum and I just liked it – plus it was kind of fitting to the book I was reading which was The House of the Four Winds.

Also, and unbelievable as it may sound – we checked out this cafe bar simply because of the name which in spite of the slightly different spelling has LoTR overtures – meaning we simply had to go inside.  We had to – REALLY!  You never know – Aragorn could have been nestled away in a dark corner.  And, anyway it would be rude to just walk on by.  Colour me happy.  This place has so many beers to choose from – if you like beer then prepare to be deliriously happy.  The wall is covered with boards and boards and boards of possibilities to choose from.  I rather latched onto a delicious sour cherry beer.  Then to top it off we were surprised by an impromptu performance by a Jamaican artist known as Brushy One String – which was absolutely fantastic.

A good time all round.  I won’t turn this into a massive tourist post – just wanted to share a few pics.

Hope you’ve all had a fab weekend.

Amsterdam is a great city, can’t wait to go back and see that library – I kissed it last time!

Haha. The library was brilliant – I just stood there gaping! Literally GAPING!

I actually meant to say ‘missed it’ last time, but I like the idea of kissing a library!!

Lovely photos! And of course, I’m salivating at the picture of that library 🙂 I have been to Amsterdam, but that was like ages and ages and ages ago. What a beautiful place, would love to visit again soon. Sounds like you had a great time!

We did – we took our time and really walked around which is actually the best thing for Amsterdam because it’s not so big that you can’t do everything by foot. It’s a very attractive City with all the canals.
That library was great – and even more so because I wasn’t expecting it all! Mouth open wide with astonishment – positively gaping.

I love Amsterdam although I didn’t go to the library I was delighted to visit Anne Frank’s house, although it was a poignant visit. Love your pictures and they have made me determined to visit again soon and take in the library

We didn’t get to see the Anne Frank house (other than the outside) – the queue was absolutely unbelievable. We should have booked on line – next time though. We need to organise ourselves better. So, we both have reasons to go back. 😀

I’ve never been so I am totally jealous. My husband is in Germany right now for work and I am jealous over that as well

Aww, so unfair – but, he is working! We’re making our way slowly round Europe, bit by bit. There’s a lot to see! Then we’re hoping to make our way over to the US – but that’s a different story – such a long flight means we’ll have to have a longer break. Amsterdam was like 45 minutes on the plane which is actually quicker than getting to London/Cornwall or Scotland! There wasn’t even enough time to turn kindles on!

One of the things I think the USA lacks is the convenience of being able to easily get away to another country and culture for the weekend. And of course, beer and books – great combo.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah, this was a really quick journey for us and actually worked out quicker than travelling to certain places in the UK – mainly because you tend to drive. We’re sort of mid country so it can take 5 hours approx to reach either side – or 45 minutes to reach Amsterdam!
But, you’re living in such a huge country that it must feel like you’re going somewhere completely different if you travel to the other side?? Plus, differences in terrain and weather. I can’t wait to start visiting the US but we’re still making our way round Europe – then US!
      Lynn 😀

Because we have so many chain stores here (gas stations, fast food, grocery stores) the differences throughout the country are subtler.

And New Mexico is roughly the size of Germany. A five hour drive doesn’t let me traverse half the state (from top to bottom).

But food is a great way to explore the USA. Lots of variation in foods based on location (what grows locally) and tradition/culture.

It would take ages to see everywhere in the US – and I fancy quite a lot of places!! We almost thought of coming over this summer – doing a few days in New York and then Boston but we decided to leave it this year and get our act together!

Books and beer are like, my two favourite things. Throw in a curry and i’d call this heaven.

Strangely enough we did have a very lovely curry whilst away!
