Are you one of a kind??

b2bf5-toptentuesday2

This week at The Broke and the Bookish the theme is : ‘Top Ten Most Unique Books you’ve Read (maybe the MC was really different, maybe it was the way it was written, a very unique spin on a genre or topic, etc.)’.

  1. All the Truth That’s in Me by Julie Berry – I just loved this story.  It’s told in a very unusual and captivating voice – almost as though the storyteller is recounting a story to somebody ‘you never looked at me’ or ’you swept your hair from your eyes’, etc.  The story just completely grabbed my attention from beginning to end.
  2. Longbourn by Jo Baker – a favourite classic told from a different perspective.  This was so good and for me a really original way of looking at these stories with fresh eyes – I could read lots of classics retold in this way!
  3. Twleve by Jasper Kent – this is one of those novels that takes you back into the good old fashioned realm of ‘proper’ vampires – nasty, smelly and evil, will definitely drain your body of blood but they like to play with their food a bit first!!  *be afraid*
  4. Witch Light – first book I read by Susan Fletcher – I love her books.  She’s an author who literally makes you feel you’ve stepped into the book and Witch Light was such an unusual story.  I don’t deny it took me a few chapters to get into but once it had my attention.  Wow.
  5. The Sandman Graphic Novels by Neil Gaiman – first graphic novels that I ever read.
  6. The Girl with all the Gifts by M R Carey – basically, a zombie story with a difference and told from a different perspective.  A ‘can’t put down’ book.
  7. The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt – my first, and only ever, cowboy book.  I loved this.  Not what I expected. Full of wit.  If anybody has anymore cowboy stories like this one then count me in.
  8. Gail Carriger – her steampunk novels (The Parasol Protectorate).  I haven’t read the whole series but I really enjoyed this and it was my first foray into steampunk.  Steam?  Punk??  Steampunk????? (why did nobody tell me about steampunk years ago??) *wags finger*
  9. I am Legend by Richard Matheson – got to be one of the most unique and unexpected endings.  Ever!
  10. The Prince of Thorns, by Mark Lawrence – very original.  Definitely the first time I’ve read about such a young anti hero.  Split into two time frames.  Grimdark in the extreme.

Now, I’m sure you’re going to remind me of loads of other great, unique books – but, you know this list is 10 only!!!

I have been meaning to check out Gail Carriger’s work for some time. Steampunk is so much fun. Also, i have a thing for armed parasols.

I agree that I Am Legend was not the ending that I expected. Actually, most of that book was not what I expected.

Yeah, I am Legend was generally unexpected all round. I wouldn’t say its one of those books that you have a deep and wonderful feeling about when you’ve finished. I mean, its a bit grim, but I loved what he did and the whole concept of the title!

Wow, I have heard of almost none of these! I just decided to add Gail Carriger to my TBR today because you’re the second or third person who had those books on your list and the description someone gave intrigued me.

I never finished the series – but, I do have the final book and it’s on my ‘to be continued’ list! I loved the first one. It just felt so original and it’s written in this very ‘stiff upper lip’ fashion that is really amusing.
      Lynn 😀

I really need get my hands on The Girl With All the Gifts…sounds so good!

It’s very good. I think you’d really like it.

I second The Sisters Brothers, I Am Legend and Prince of Thorns! Loved them all.

The Girl With All The Gifts has been on my TBR since forever and I need to get onto that! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it though.

    Cheers,

You should definitely pick it up. I thought it was a compelling read.
      Thanks for stopping by.

Steampunk is a wonderful thing. Try Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding, or Boneshaker by Cherie Priest if you like it and want more with a slightly less romance angle.

I’ve read Boneshaker and really enjoyed it and intend on continuing with the series. Will have to check out Retribution Falls.
      Thanks

Great list 🙂 I read and really enjoyed All the Truth That’s In Me, definitely a unique read and a brilliant book too. My TTT.

Thanks for stopping by. All the Truth, I thought, was a great book and yet it seems to be greatly under-hyped!
      Lynn 😀

  8. Genki Jason's avatar Genki Jason

I’ve read works by some of the authors on this list.

I also loved The Sisters Brothers. It also happens to be my first and only cowboy book.

So Sandman was your first graphic novel? They were mine too alongside John Constantine (I was really too young to be reading that stuff).

I am Legend didn’t quite grab me.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

The Sisters Brothers was great – I can’t believe it’s not ‘bigger’ somehow.
I am Legend is a strange book – it’s a bit grim to be honest but it’s the shock ending and the final message that just won me over. Pretty sombre reading about Neville’s almost descent into madness through loneliness.

The Sisters Brothers could be made into a movie. A really off-kilter western that acts as an antidote to the macho western of the past, the grim-dark Eastwood reboot of the 90’s and the elegiac stuff from Kevin Costner.

I think it would be a fantastic movie. Meant to ask you – did you watch the remake of Oldboy – not in the same class as the original in my view. I like Josh Brolin but he’s not a patch on the original actor!
        Lynn 😀

I didn’t watch it. I was eager and then saw the reviews and decided to give it a miss. I watch one movie a week in the cinema and so it was an easy choice to make at the time. No regrets on that one… Unlike Stoker.

I hope to do a Park Chan-Wook season so I’ll review the Korean original at some point.

Just watched the trailer for Stoker – very creepy looking!
