Don’t go there..

Top Ten Tuesdays (hosted by the Broke and the Bookish this week is all about where or who you don’t want to be!

‘Top Ten Worlds I’d Never Want To Live In OR Top Ten Characters I’d NEVER Want To Trade Places With’.  I’ve done five of each:

Worlds in which I don’t want to live:

  1. The silos created by Hugh Howey in Wool/Shift/Dust – Claustrophobia, lies and deceit – plus all those bloody stairs and you definitely don’t want to be put on window cleaning duty!
  2. Ashes by Ilsa J Bick – this is a scary world where you have to keep your wits in order to stay alive.  (Unfortunately my wits sometimes go on walk about)
  3. Sunshine – vampires live, they’re brutal, they definitely don’t eat tofu and you really do have to stay indoors after the dark
  4. The Forest of Hands and Teeth – zombies!!!!  And some of them can run – really fast.  Be afraid (especially if YOU don’t run really fast!)
  5. All the Truth in Me by Julie Berry is set in New England during puritanical times. Definitely don’t want to live there.  Apart from the fact that you’re put in the stocks for not attending church meetings, you’re a wanton hussy if you don’t wear your hair covered and it’s damned hard work – there are very few books!!

Characters I don’t want to be:

  1. Gollum from Lord of The Rings/The Hobbit by J R R Tolkien – we all know how that ends after all and it looks a bit too toasty for my liking plus he eats raw fish and I’m not talking sushi!
  2. Arthur Kips – the young guy from The Woman in Black by Susan Hill – no way am I spending a night in that house like he did!
  3. Miriam from Blackbird/Mockingbird/Cormorant by Chuck Wendig – I love her character but I certainly wouldn’t want to be in her shoes – it probably seems like a great gift that she has but I wouldn’t be thankful to have it.
  4. The Falconer from Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastard series – what a horrible character brrrr!
  5. Conor – from A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – a brilliant story but so sad and I definitely wouldn’t trade places with him and what he has to go through

So, who who’s shoes would you rather not be in and what world do you not want to wake up in tomorrow!

I don’t think I’d want to be ANY character from Lynch’s GB series since they all get physically and or emotionally put through the ringer at some point in the books. Same things for any character in George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series.

    • lynnsbooks

Oh yes, I definitely don’t want to be any character – good or bad – in George Martin’s world! He’s ruthless with his people.
      Lynn 😀

Ooh Arthur Kips is a good one! Although I do kind of love old, creepy houses.

    • lynnsbooks

I do love creepy houses but I think I’d want a bit of company in that one – especially when the causeway is under water.
      Lynn 😀

I wouldn’t want to be the Falconer either – after all that Gentlemen Bastards put him through, and will probably do him later in the series (fingers crossed).

I wouldn’t want to be part of a bridgecrew in High Prince Sadeas’s army in The Way of Kings. Nasty work for almost no pay, and extremely high probability of dying a nasty death.

    • lynnsbooks

Hahah, why didn’t I think of the Bridgecrew! That’s a really good one and I’m reading the book! Doh!!
      Lynn 😀

I wouldn’t want to be: 1) Tess from Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Her life is just so sad; 2) Travis from Old Yeller. No way I could shoot my dog; 3) Susie Salmon from The Lovely Bones. She endured eight years of watching her family suffer; 4) Bone from Bastard Out of Carolina. Does this really even need an explanation?! 5) Moaning Myrtle from Harry Potter. Poor thing, she was literally teased to death.

    • lynnsbooks

You know I actually sort of struggled with thinking who I didn’t want to be but those are really good – especially Susie Salmon – she has a pretty horrible ending!
      Lynn 😀

  5. cherylmahoney

Ooh, yes, I would not want to live in Sunshine’s world! Although the desserts…no, still not worth it.

    • lynnsbooks

Yeah – cinnamon buns or rolls I seem to remember! Nom. Still – really nasty vampires.
      Lynn 😀

Ha, I like how you take five of each.

I have to echo others in saying that being anyone in the world of the Gentlemen Bastards would suck.

Spending a night in a haunted

I consider The Forest of Hands and Teeth one of the most irritating zombie books I have ever read all the way through to the end (I’ve stopped reading a lot mid-way…) because the central protagonist was one of the most selfish and inconsiderate characters I have ever encountered especially in the situation she was in! And no, being a teenage girl isn’t an excuse!

    • Genki Jason

A bit that was cut off…

Spending a night in a haunted house as Arthur Kips would be kind of fun once you get used to the idea that there’s a ghost. Indeed the tragic life of Arthur Kips ended on a nice note in the movie version… so to speak…

      • lynnsbooks

I actually haven’t see the movie version – I wondered if they might have spoilt the book and it put me off a little. The book is really creepy, but psychologically so and I thought maybe they would try to do something with the story to ramp it up a bit. I should watch it though.
I quite like the idea of a night in a haunted house – but I think I’d like company! Saying that, it didn’t help out the main character in the Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
        Lynn 😀

    • lynnsbooks

Haha – the Forest of Hands and Teeth is a funny one – I know what you mean about the central character and she was selfish and inconsiderate – my daughter liked that book so I continued with the series. The first definitely wasn’t my favourite, I didn’t hate it or anything. I liked the way they were living in the village, and the secret with the Sisters, plus all the houses in the trees with walkways in between, it reminded me a little of the Shyamalam film. I also quite liked the way the zombies went almost into hibernation. The second and third I really enjoyed and could have read more but they didn’t continue with the same protagonist – the story moved forward.
