Purely for the sake of idle curiosity….. if you had to choose one of the above film series, and I’m talking about a life and death situation here so no cheating.  Which once would it be?

So, Peter Jackson’s three films (The Fellowship, Two Towers and Return of the King) vs the first (original) films from George Lucas (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi).

And, a few images to give you fond memories…

Ahhh Lynn is has to be Star Wars for me. LOTR is far too slow in some places, especially Two Towers which went on and on and on far too long.

Haha. I must admit that originally I thought LoTR. Then when I started looking at the images I was thinking of how I loved the first movie! It’s so difficult.
I’ve asked the question and I don’t even know what my answer is!!

Star Wars. But a lot of that is tied into fond memories of it from childhood.

Two for Star Wars and none for LotR!! I know what you mean though – Star Wars has such fond reminiscences for me too.

One for LOTR. I don’t hate Star Wars, but I do have some pretty firm Meh…

Phew – thought LoTR was gonna get zip there for a moment. I don’t hate the latter three Star Wars but I definitely feel very ambivalent towards them. And, major bugbear is that the last three are now known as 1, 2 and 3 which annoys me incredibly and turns me into a real grump! I have arguments about it even…

Star Wars, without a moment’s hesitation! Those movies have been with me since my childhood.

Plus, you could always read the LotR books if the movies were forbidden. I think it’s different when they were a book originally, unlike Star Wars which is defined by the movies.

LoTR could have so easily gone wrong for me as I adored the books and more often than not I don’t like the film. LoTR has been brilliantly adapted for the big screen and remains almost totally true to the book. To a certain extent they both have very fond memories but in a different way, one at the time was a book love and the other movie love – I find it hard to choose. In fact I just keep going back and forwards! Doh and double doh!! I am going to stop sitting on the fence…

That’s true, fond memories are decidedly a factor! I don’t have any special memories about the LotR movies, but I did enjoy them, and I was never a huuuge fan of the books, while I liked them, so that makes the decision easy for me.

Both films are okay but hardly essential viewing to me now that I’m now longer a kid and I;m all sophisticated and a cinephile into foreign films and metatextual and post-modern stuff (and I wear sunglasses and a turtleneck jumper and quote Satre) but I’ll side with Star Wars because it has the better designs and Han Solo.

Funny you should bring Star Wars up because I found this video yesterday.

Absolutely agree. I totally don’t watch these films, obviously. Now I’m all grown up. Except maybe last week LOL. What is that video from??

There’s a music label making music inspired by the 80’s and they use clips from films of the time period. It’s my latest craze. Miami Vice has never looked so good. This video has Han Solo blasting that alien dude first.

Gut reaction is LoTR. . .loved the books, loved the movies ~ and if it were Legolas or Aragorn I had to travel with OMG I would have died and gone to heaven! But then I read the comment about Hans Solo up above and started thinking about all the humor in the Star Wars series and there’s something to be said for those movies as well. I’ll stick with my gut reaction however. Hard to beat LoTR!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yes, I would also die and go to heaven if I got to travel with Aragorn, on the other hand I’d probably feel the same if I travelled with Hans Solo. It’s actually a really tough one to choose! Thanks for giving your vote.

If it’s just the movies, I’d go with Star Wars, because the LOTR books are great. (Original Star Wars books not so much.) If you were talking about the two universes, that would be a tougher call. Maybe LOTR in that case, but a difficult choice.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yep, just movies – so you’re down for Star Wars which appears to be winning the vote methinks.

Oh how could you make me choose?! I love both! I have very fond memories of going to the cinema as a child to see the Star Wars trilogy with my father when they were remastered and rereleased. But also as a teenager I remember the excited wait each Christmas for the next Lord of the Rings film which I sorely missed when the trilogy ended! The more I think about it the harder it is getting to choose 😛

Oh Star Wars for me, and I don’t even like sci-fi. I saw the original trio on the big screen & what an experience that was. I prefer the older ones than the newer ones, because there was more to the plots, less violence and greater depth to the characters, especially the women.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Definitely agree with preferring the older ones to the new versions. Maybe that’s just for the sake of old reminiscing but I do love the first three original moves. I think so far that Star Wars is winning!
