“Abandon all hope ye who enter here ..”

The long lazy days of summer are almost at an end and the nights begin to draw in.  The leaves on the trees begin to blush in preparation for autumn. Shut your curtains, lock your doors, prepare a glass of your favourite poison (ahem, not really poison!) and crack open that dusty novel you’ve been saving  for R.I.P.  Difficult to believe but the Readers’ Imbibing Peril event hosted by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings is once more upon us.

Not a challenge but a fun event that anyone can join in with.  Loads of bloggy goodness, chat, readalongs, reviews – prepare for your TBR to grow to monstrous new heights!  Focusing on dark fantasy, chillers, thrillers, murders and other things that go bump in the night the details are all here so go and sign yourself up now.

There was a hand in the dark – it held a book… make it so!

I’m thinking of taking on some of the following:

R.I.P VIII

  1. Beyond Black by Hilary Mantel
  2. Something Wicked this Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
  3. Devil’s Kiss by Sarwat Chadda
  4. Forsaken by Jana Oliver
  5. The String Diaries by Stephen Lloyd Jones
  6. Full Blooded by Amanda Carlson
  7. The Returned by Jason Mott
  8. Human Remains by Elizabeth Haynes
  9. Dinner at Deviant’s Palace by Tim Powers
  10. A Discourse in Steel by Paul Kempt
  11. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

(Probably won’t manage all those – or may even become distracted by others, who knows?  It’s all part of the fun.)

I’m in for this as well. Let the spooky fun begin! 😀

I was going to stick to four, but I gave in and added The String Diaries to my list as a fifth. I’ve also got NOS4R2 on my Kindle and it demands to be read! This will be perfect for it. 😀

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yeah, there’s no way I’m going to read all those on the list – plus you never know what else is going to turn up! The String Diaries looks good. Ohh, NOS4R2 definitely demands reading.
Looking forward to this and all the reviews.
      Lynn 😀
Hey – did you enjoy your hols?

  2. Elizabeth Campbell's avatar Elizabeth Campbell

yay! I also want to read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.
My spooky choice is Interview with a Vampire, Anne Rice. Have you read that? I’ve been meaning to read it during Spooky Season for several years now, this is the year for it, maybe!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yes, I read Interview with a Vampire last year (for RIP I think). I enjoyed it. I thought it was well done and all things considered it was fairly groundbreaking in terms of changing the way people think about vampires.
      Definitely give it a shot.
      Lynn 😀

I love your description of the non-challenge, and all the bloggy goodness coming up! It’s nice to have lots of books to think about–I hope you enjoy, whichever and however many you end up reading!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I love this event. It seems almost tailor made to fit in with my reading preferences which makes it very easy for me to get along but more than that I love the way everyone gets involved with each other. I think this and the Once Upon a Time event are the best I’ve come across and I quite miss them when they end!
      Looking forward to your reviews.
      Lynn 😀

Yes! It’s the camaraderie of Carl’s challenges that I love best. Maybe because they’re shorter, so everyone’s interest stays strong, compared to a long 12-month challenge…

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I think you’re probably right to be honest. And also because it’s not 12 months you start to miss them inbetween!

I’ve got The Shining lined up for this. I’m finally going to just grit my teeth and read the damn thing. 🙂
Good luck on your reading goals!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Oh, the Shining – I’ve not read that – hasn’t King just brought out a sequel with the young boy all grown up. I can’t help picturing those trees and hearing that kid say in a creepy voice ‘redrum redrum redrum’. Gives me the shivers. Maybe I should read this. King is a damn fine writer after all.
      Lynn 😀

        Yeah? I didn’t know that. :\
Oh, do! Let me know if you decide to? We can read this together, too. 🙂

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I will do! It would be fun to read these together.

Interesting list Lynn. Plenty I haven’t read so I will be interested to hear what you think of them. Meanwhile I have read Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I would highly recommend either. Happy reading 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I can’t wait to read Something Wicked (it makes me think of one of the Harry Potter films which starts with the choir singing ‘something wicked this way comes’ – I know I’m a sad individual!).
Will probably go for Hill House first though. I’ve been fancying that for some time and I’ve seen two different film versions – the black and white one was by far the best so I might watch that again and do a comparison piece.
Happy reading to you too and I’ll be checking out your review. After all once your tbr is this big you might as well get ideas of grandeur and by even more books!
      Lynn 😀

ooo you’ve got a great list here! I just finished Sarwat Chadda’s The City of Death ~ is Devil’s Kiss for adults or middle-grade readers?

I haven’t read any of the others on your list so I’ll be anxious to read your thoughts! Especially on The Haunting of Hill House ~ is it very scary? Enjoy R.I.P!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I think Devil’s Kiss might be YA (which I don’t mind to be honest). Or at least I hope it is – I probably won’t finish if it’s mid grade. No offence to mid grade books or anything just probably feels a bit too young for me.
I’ve not read Hill House yet but have seen two different film adaptations so would like to see which is my favourite – book or film.
      Are you in for RIP?
      Lynn 😀

I hope you do too and I look forward to checking out your reviews.

I’m hoping to read The Haunting at Hill House as well! It sure looks spooky! You have lots of good reading ahead of you. Enjoy!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I’m really keen to get on. Hill House first methings. Happy reading to you too. Although happy is probably the wrong word for this event isn’t it! Chilling reads to you too more likely.
      Lynn 😀

Love your opening paragraph, it makes me want to join in…er, wait….

Anyway, love that you are in again and that you have found such a great list of potential reads. In another year or so when the memories have faded a bit more I need to re-read the Shirley Jackson novels.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I’m looking forward to the Hill House book I must admit! I’m hoping that the Hilary Mantel will be good as well. I love that you host this challenge. I think I’ve become addicted to it! I probably won’t read The Historian as I read that a few years ago – I thought it was good. It’s not a fast paced novel but I enjoyed the writing. It’s more your thinking person’s vampire tale as opposed to wham bam action.
      Lynn 😀

      • Carl V. Anderson's avatar Carl V. Anderson

I hope the Mantel is good for you too. I’m not big on fast-paced vampire books anyway, being spoiled so many years ago by Dracula.

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I enjoyed the Historian and I think you’ll like it. I liked all the description of places in particular. And, whilst I wouldn’t say this was horror it has the odd chiling moments here and there.
        Lynn 😀

I never really know what I will end up reading for a Stainless Steel Droppings challenge. I love the built-in flexibility.

It’s been years since I read a Hillary Mantel book.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I’m looking forward to the Hilary Mantel although it’s obviously one of her earlier pieces so hopefully lives up to her latest books.
I like the flexibility of the event and the fact that it’s chilled out with only very loose guidelines for taking part.
      Lynn 😀

    Lynn,

I’m so excited to see a ghost novel by Hilary Mantel! I almost can’t believe it. I just finished reading Wolf Hall for my book group and was blown away (as were my fellow book group members) by her storytelling skills. Thank you for bringing this book to my attention!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

I’m hoping it’s going to be good. I found it ages ago but saved it for this event.
      Lynn 😀
