Guess which tower…

Bit of foolishness for a Saturday afternoon.  Decided to build a tower of books as part of a little competition chucked out there by Mark Lawrence (check it out here).  I don’t think I’m really in the running as the objective is to actually build the tallest tower (and this clearly isn’t it) so I decided to go for a fully built tower with turrets.  I can’t do the tall tower because:

  1. I’m too short.  It would require steps and that’s not a good idea
  2. My co-ordination would become wobbly and I’d probably just keep knocking it over.  I can’t build a house of cards even.
  3. See the maniac critter at the front of the picture – that’s my dog – and he though he was missing out so he kept bounding in and out of the room – so any chance of building a real tower would have been in grave danger of toppling!

So, which tower do you think I was aiming for – it actually doesn’t really look like it but if you want a guess then go for it: (oh and Katie is stood inside – I did go away and leave her for a while!)  Now, I jus need to tidy all this away – Doh!!!!

My tower of books

We will never see the likes of this again, once Kindle mania truly sets in! 😉

Oh no, you’ve found another downside to the kindle – no more Christmas Tree books, or Mount TBR or Towers!

Awesome! I’d guess Orthanc or Barad-dûr from the Lord of the Rings.. If I’d start to pile my books I’m afraid it wouldn’t get higher than the height of a hobbit-hole door. yaiks!!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yes, Barad-dûr – originally I was going to go for Weathertop but it was a bit impossible. It was a great quest! I did say I couldn’t do a tall tower – I’m too short!

I thought this was some LotR post and was about to flee but the tower looks epic. I’d do something similar with DVD’s but it might end up looking like a space elevator or something from the cover of an Arthur C. Clarke novel.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

On the one hand DVDs would probably be a lot better to work with – books have got too many different sizes and slippery covers – but if your tower (or space elevator) came crashing down there would be a real danger of damage to the disks 😦
I can’t say I enjoyed putting all the books back – and I confess my bookshelves do now look a bit chaotic!

If anything happened to my discs… I would lose my mind and wander the streets in an inconsolable state much like Nic Cage

Well that certainly gets across how much you love your dvds. Roflma. What is that from???

Vampire’s Kiss. It’s good because it’s so bad… and there are so many YouTube clips 🙂

Haha, I love this! What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon when it’s miserable outside. Good effort.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

We had a giggle. Unfortunately it did rather highlight the fact that I have about 80 books sitting unread! Eek. Less time building methinks!!

Hehehe! Perhaps a Scott Lynch Gentlemen Bastards’ tower – but those were mostly made of glass. But then again, I bet your tower fell apart easily anough right, to be a metaphor of a glass tower.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

It did fall apart all too easily – it wouldn’t do to put your prisoners in there not in less you’re a total softie and want them to break free easily!

I don’t know what you were aiming for, but I like it nonetheless! Looks like a lot of work, but fun just the same. At the very least you were able to hold many of your books in your hands and have fun with them. That alone was worth it. I enjoy dusting for that same reason.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

It was fun for sure. And, it highlighted all my unread books – so I’ve put them aside now – maybe if I keep looking at that pile it will stop me buying more!

What happens if the book you want is on the bottom row?

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

One of two things – you have to either whip the book out so quickly that the stack remains – a bit like the tablecloth trick. Or you don’t read that book. Actually we missed an opportunity there for a game to conclude – we could have all kept trying to remove a book and see who finally brought it down!

        Next time!! 🙂
Was Katy really in there? What a patient girl – how old is she?
Another reason for NOT pulling a book out from the bottom!

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Yes, she was really in there – she said it was very warm – but I suppose it would be with all that paper. I think she would have liked to have burst out of there but I wouldn’t let her – you don’t want to damage the books after all!
        Lynn 😀

ummm..there’s a possibility here that your pile of books would beat mine.. only a possibility mind you because 90 percent of mine are hardbacks but..holy cow!!!!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

The thing that this really demonstrated was how many books I still have waiting tbr. If nothing else it’s made me put all those together in a different pile so they can make me feel guilty and perhaps that way I’ll stop buying more!

That’s hysterical Lynn! Thanks for the photo!

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

You’d think I had nothing better to do would you!! Putting it away was not as good fun as making it. I think I should chuck a challenge out there for everyone to make some sort of structure out of books!
      Lynn 😀

      • Elizabeth Campbell's avatar darkcargo

actually that would be fun! I once buried myself in the books that I purchased over the weekend at ReaderCon and had my bro photo that. I’ve also seen a photo of a lady bathing in books. I say, excellent idea!

      • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Ha ha, buried in books – like being buried on the beach. I love it!
        Lynn 😀

Looks fun, not sure I would enjoy the cleanup though. Cute dog. Miles and Att would destroy this in seconds.

    • @lynnsbooks's avatar lynnsbooks

Dude was trying to destroy it – he kept bounding in and out and couldn’t understand what we were doing at all. Funnily when Paul grabbed his phone to take a picture he just shot in front of the tower – almost as though he thought he was protecting Katie – which is why he’s in the shot. He’s her knight in furry armour.
Yes, cleaning up was not fun. I had some wild notion about actually putting the books into some sort of order! Didn’t happen.
      Lynn 😀
