To do or not to do. A list of intentions for 2013

So, I’ve had a think about the New Year’s Resolutions I intend to make and break for 2013.  Okay, that might seem a bit negative but let’s face it I’m not going to stick to everything completely.  Anyway, if I manage to stick to all my resolutions perhaps I’ve been too easy on myself!!

Firstly, and really rather predictable and boring, I need to pick back up with exercise, healthy eating and doing more walking.  The biggest problem with this in the past year has been the weather.  Now, I know you’re probably all groaning loudly but it does seem to have rained a lot this year and frankly I don’t want to walk to work and be drenched when I arrive.  It just makes the rest of the day very damp, miserable and uncomfortable.  But, I’ll just have to get over myself and my aversion to getting wet because the weather certainly doesn’t show any signs of immediate improvement.  Perhaps some waterproofs?  Wellies  – not exactly renowned for walking in!  A very large umbrella – I have a vision of taking off during a large gust of wind or even worse causing some sort of accident as my umbrella is taken by a particular strong gust and whipped into the path of oncoming traffic!  Okay, no brollies!  The drowned rat look is going to be the new black for the next 12 months!

Okay, having got the obvious resolution out of the way – reading!  Well, this year, I failed miserably on my challenges!  100 books in a year – nope, nowhere near (about 70/80ish).  I did take part in a few events and readalongs however and, in my defence, I didn’t include every book on my list because a few I didn’t review and a few more I never finished (and I’m not reviewing a book if I don’t finish it because it doesn’t feel fair).  It’s not my biggest pet hate when reading reviews but it does feel wrong to me so I don’t go there (my biggest peeve is people who give books 1 star on Amazon or Goodreads, etc, and then base that rating on the price of the book!  What?  Just no.  Look, I know this can become an expensive hobby, particularly if you read quite a few books like I do, but I want to know what you thought of the book not the price.  And, anyway, if you object to the price you could always wait for the price to come down or wait for your library to get a copy – don’t down mark a book because you think it’s expensive!  So, do I try and chill a bit with my books.  Don’t lets be silly!! I’m taking part in a couple of events in Jan/Feb focusing on sci-fi and also a read along – interesting in taking part in any of these none challenges??  Check out the details here, here and here.  They’re going to be good so you should really sign yourself up.  Throughout the year I’ll also be reading some books from the Mercury Retrograde’s catalogue.  More details to follow on this.  I think I probably will enter the 100 books a year challenge (because I’m pigheaded and don’t like to admit defeat) and I will try and be a bit more focused but, at the end of the day, my reading is just for fun, relaxation, escape, whatever.  It’s not a chore.  On top of that, having looked at some of the expected books for 2013 I don’t think I’ll have a problem reading lots this year and probably exceeding my challenges!

My final mission for 2013 is a bit odd.  I’ve decided to actually do something with our photographs.  I know that probably sounds random, particularly as we’re in the digital era and a good deal of our pictures are stored electronically but I quite like the idea of going through and selecting some (not all – that would be too big a task not to mention incredibly expensive) and putting them in some kind of order.  A bit of a pain because I’ll have to start having pictures printed out, etc, etc, but I quite like the idea and it will give me the opportunity to revisit some of our past holidays.

There they are.  Fairly low key really.  Healthier eating, exercise, reading and something a bit family orientated.

Let’s see how well that all goes and what falls flat at the first hurdle!

I wish you the very best with your resolutions, especially the health ones. Would it help if you kept a dry pair of shoes/socks/stockings at work so that whatever you walked in you wouldn’t have to wear all day?

I think getting to the 70-80% of your reading goal is pretty good! I set my same goal on Goodreads this year as last, 65 books. We’ll see how that goes.

I hate any reviews on Amazon that don’t relate to the product in a meaningful way. Price being a big one, negative reviews when one didn’t finish the book being another UNLESS the person has some really legitimate things to say about what they didn’t like about what they read. We’ve all started books that are poorly written, contain material we find unnecessarily objectionable, etc. and those are legitimate complaints. Still, I’d rather make those in comments on other people’s reviews than mark down the book on Amazon unless I’ve read the whole thing.

Very happy you are participating in all the SF related events. They will be fun!

I definitely need to get back into the walking – especially having a ‘sit down all day’ type of job!
I’m really looking forward to the readalongs although being now 2013 – I’m already behind with my reading! Doh.

Those sound like great resolutions, Lynn. Just ignore the rain and the pain and get your muscles working! Living in the UK, you just have to accept that the weather is unpredictable so go out with a trench-coat and some sunglasses!

Reading 80 books in a year is a pretty good achievement! Well done. I tend to read a lot of books from my local library (I pass it on my way from and to work) and I have read a lot this year.

    Happy New Year!

I’m not going mad with my resolutions this year. I think if you go too far you’re just setting yourself up to fail! I’m definitely going to go with the exercise thing. About 18 months ago I was as fit as a flea – it’s amazing how quickly you can just let it all slide. It didn’t really start out intentional but there you go. I find exercise quite addictive so hopefully once I get going all will be good. I like walking to work it’s a good way of getting your exercise without taking too much time off your day. It’s about 35 mins walking or 20 mins on the bus so if I walk there and back I only add an extra 30 mins but I get over an hours exercise – bahdahbing! Just when it’s raining it’s a bit grim. Also when I’m walking I listen to a language – either Italian or French (not good enough for Japanese) so I’m killing two birds with one stone.
Me in a trenchcoat and sunglasses – all matrix like – or Harry Dresden (but not a man!!!)
I love my library – and funnily enough I think I’m the best customer. I still buy a lot of books but, come on, you have to be reasonable about these things.
Anyway, you have a good year too. I’m looking forward to many more of your reviews.
      Lynn 😀

SOme very realistic resolutions and I wish you the best in working towards them – even if you don’t achieve the end result. Reading 60/70 books in a year is nowhere near failing – and even better if you enjoyed most of them 🙂

    • lynnsbooks

I did have a good year with most of my book choices. There were a few that I couldn’t complete but I suppose it’s inevitable that there’ll be the odd one in amongst there that you struggle to complete.

I do wish you the best of luck in 2013. Exercise is a big goal for me as well. We can encourage each other and do our best to keep us honest and focused. Happy new year!

    • lynnsbooks

Yes, definitely – I really do need some encouragement. I almost thought that I’d do myself a weekly update to keep myself on track – or more to the point shame me into having to do something so that I have something to report back on!
Happy New Year to you too. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of your blogging community this year and look forward more in 2013 😀

I’m with Carl on the extra pair of socks. Wellies (especially the ankle-high ones) can be ok to walk in, I’ve bought a pair by a brand that specialises in them. Also, check out the Dutch umbrella brand Senz. Normal umbrellas don’t last long in windy Rotterdam, but these do. Here’s to more walking in 2013 while staying dry!

As for photos, printing and framing them may sound old-school, but wouldn’t they cheer up your home? I’ve been wanting to do this for ages, so a new resolution that I just made up is: to take more pics of friends and family this year.

Sheesh, giving a book a bad rating because of its price? That’s ludicrous… hopefully potential readers are wise enough to skip those “reviews”.

Happy 2013 to you and your loved ones Lynn!

Getting more exercise is on my list too, but it’s like 30 degrees out and I hate the cold.

    • lynnsbooks

I must say that I prefer the cold to the rain but not sort of frozen eyebrows cold!
      Lynn 😀
