Friday Firsts: A Matter of Blood (The Dog-Faced Gods #1) by Sarah Pinborough

Friday Firsts is a new meme that runs every Friday over on Tenacious Reader. The idea is to feature the first few sentences/paragraph of your current book and try and outline your first impressions as a result. This is a quick and easy way to share a snippet of information about your current read and to perhaps tempt others. Stop on by and link up with Tenacious Reader. This Friday I’m reading : A Matter of Blood (The Dog-Faced Gods #1) by Sarah Pinborough
It’s the little things that count.
Carla Rae’s cooling body was testament to that. Her wide eyes no longer shone as the drying surfaces became sticky. With no further call to pump through the lifeless veins, her blood settled heavily in her limbs. The cheap electric clock on the bedside table ticked the minutes away, moving on from the moment of her death without even a hitching breath of hesitation. The world continued. Twenty-five-year-old Carla Rae didn’t. There would be no twenty-sixth birthday. The inner mechanics of her body were accepting that, even if in the dying moments her mind had raged against the inevitability.
Tick tock. Silent-body-clock stopped.
My First Impressions
Pretty chilling to be honest. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve read so far by Sarah Pinborough so I decided to backtrack and, as it’s the season to be scary, I though this would fit the bill nicely.
What you reading this Friday?? What are your first impressions??
13 October 2017
She certainly writes with punch, doesn’t she? I have read some of her dark fantasy – but I haven’t read any of her murder mystery series. Is her writing as dark there too?
Well, I’ve read Mayhem and Murder – which are wonderfully gothic fantasy tales, dark and creepy. Her fairytale retellings, Poison, Beauty and Charm are retellings with a difference and the characters are nothing like their Disney Versions. 13 Minutes is a YA thriller – which I thought was really good. I haven’t read Behind her Eyes yet but it seems to be doing very well and I do have a copy. I loved Matter of Blood – really good and I’ll definitely continue with the series. Which books have you read??
Lynn
I’ve only read The Shadow of the Soul – and intended to go back and read A Matter of Blood – but just didn’t quite get around to it…
Did you enjoy Shadow of the Soul – that’s the second book isn’t it?
Yes… it is the second book and you’ll no doubt be unsurprised that I read it first – and yes, I really liked it:)
Excellent – I’m looking forward to moving on with that series.
Lynn 😀
And I need to go back to the first book!
Oooh! This one of hers has always been on my radar. I can’t wait to hear your final thoughts!
I really enjoyed it – dark and creepy, sinister really. Police procedure, serial killer and two very unusual, and long lived characters. I’m going to pick up No.2 shortly – I have to know what happens next.
Lynn 😀
Sounds like exquisitely distilled Pinborough 🙂
Looking forward to learning more…
I really enjoyed it – and the pages just seemed to fly. Definitely want to read No.2.
