Once Upon a Time…. the end!

Another Once Upon a Time event has reached it’s conclusion!  It’s a little bit sad to see it finish but, at the same time we can now start to plan what books to read for RIP!  Take a couple of months off and pick your favourite dark or creepy books for the start of autumn and the drawing in of the nights.

So, Once Upon a Time.   This was another great event with lots of bloggers taking part and discussing all manner of books.  I’ve added a few more books to my already sagging and bulging at the seams tbr and generally had a lot of fun.  My books this year – and I didn’t go for any particular challenge which is in keeping with the general lack of rules and casual approach of this event.  Basically, anything goes (within the realms of myth, folklore, fantasy and fairytale that is!)

  1. The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris
  2. The Boy with the Porcelaine Blade by Den Patrick
  3. The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle
  4. Beauty by Robin McKinley
  5. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
  6. Splintered by A G Howard
  7. Thief’s Magic by Trudi Canavan
  8. The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore
  9. The Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence
  10. Blood Song by Anthony Ryan
  11. Icefall by Gillian Philip
  12. The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman
  13. The Blasted Lands by James A Moore

If I was superstitious I wouldn’t like ending on unlucky No.13.  Oh, I am superstitious…. well, never mind, at least I didn’t break any mirrors!  I’m not going to categorise these, I know that I’ve read mainly fantasy but I have also read at least one from all the other categories.

A very big thanks to Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings for yet again hosting this brilliant event.  Over and out until RIP!

13 books, that’s impressive! Can you add the links to the reviews?
That was a fun event, now that is over I’m looking forward to R.I.P.! Are you going to join?

Yeah, I love RIP. To be honest, I read these sort of books, they’re my comfort zone so reading 13 is like perfectly natural for me! Therefore I can’t really say that I did that well, I did at least one book from each challenge – my real challenge was to do 3 from each but fantasy won the day! I really enjoyed reading everyone’s reviews although I fell behind a little for the last week or so – it is hard on the tbr though.
And, yes, I will put the links on these. I was being supremely lazy and rushing to get a post up.
Will be visiting everyone else’s wraps ups.

Oh how fun! Too bad I totally missed this. If I’d heard about it, I would have totally taken this chance to pile my reading list up with fairy tale/folklore/mythological retellings. I love them 🙂

This event is so easy for me because it’s all the books I naturally read. There’s also an event in September/October called RIP (Readers Imbibing Peril) which is all about the dark side – not the force – thrillers, chillers, horror, dark fantasy – its also pretty good (and, again, a bit of a cheat for me because I love dark fantasy, a little bit of horror, plus throw in a few ghosts, ghouls and zombies and I’m a happy lass (that just sounds so not right doesn’t it!)

Well done Lynn thirteen books is a great amount to have read. I am pleased to hear you enjoyed the event. I am eagerly awaiting RIP in Autumn too got plenty of books in mind already 🙂

I know – I think I like RIP even more! Or, at least it feels like that when it’s the next upcoming event. After it finishes I will be saying I prefer OUAT!
Thirteen – yeah, it looks like a lot of books but given it’s the sort of book I read all the time it’s not a great list – I was hoping to have more from myth and folklore but only had 2 from myth and one from folklore!

🙂 I think it’s funny you’re downplaying the 13 books in the comments…I tend to feel the same way about my reading in OUaT! I mean…it’s what I *read*… Maybe we (or at least I) need to just accept well-meant congratulations!

You could be right there – I literally never accept compliments. I always play them down. That being said I’d probably struggle to read 13 historical or sci fi books in that space of time – and I do enjoy those type of books!
