This week’s Top Ten Tuesday over at the Broke and Bookish is
top ten books we’d recommend to x person
I’m not going to choose an actual person – I’m going to go for something a bit different, because if I say ‘suchabody’ should read this it will be meaningless to you all. Â So, these are my 10 – and I recommend them to everybody:
- For beautiful writing: If you love descriptive, evocative writing: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
- Ditto the above – Witch Light by Susan Fletcher – such a gorgeous book
- Dark Fantasy – The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence
- For twisted, creepy and totally unusual fantasy – any of the books by Robert Bennett, The Troupe, Mr Shivers, American Elsewhere
- For fairytales retold – that are no longer sugary sweet – Poison, Charm and Beauty by Sarah Pinborough
- For dark, dirty, smelly evil vampires, The Danilov Quintet by Jasper Kent
- For depth, worldbuilding and characters that you love the Gentlemen Bastards by Scott Lynch
- For phwoar factor – The Trueblood series by Charlaine Harris – I’m sorry but there are some hotties in these books not to mention a lot of fun
- For plenty of fun – The Anvil of the World by Kage Baker
- And, you know that I’m not going to forget – Neil Gaiman, for just about anything he writes!
🙂 This is a good idea. Sort of 10 books/authors you love and want others to read, too. Lots of titles here that I will be looking for, but of course, Rebecca is a long-time favorite.
I know, I love Rebecca – have you read any of her other works? I really liked Jamaica Inn and My Cousin Rachel.
Lynn 😀
I definitely agree with your number 1, your number 2 is in my pile to read so it will be read sometime and number 3, I’m on the start. After having read Stardust, I have Coraline in my TBR pile.
I like your idea of this list! 🙂
No.1 – soooooo good! No.2 also – I really hope you read it and enjoy it. When I first started I thought the voice it was told in was going to annoy me, then suddenly I was just drawn in and that was it! Such a gorgeously written book.
Mark Lawrence’s stories are so unbelievably good. Very dark. And, lets face it, Jorg is not a nice character – but you still can’t help wanting him to succeed.
Lynn 😀
Good suggestions — I’m adding some to my TBR list because I like so much of what you read!
Thanks Keri. I hope you enjoy whichever of these takes your fancy. I admit I’m always worried when somebody is reading a book that I really enjoyed! It’s not like I wrote the book is it but I still want others to love the same things.
Lynn 😀
I love your designations here! And I completely agree on the beautiful writing in Rebecca!
Such a good author. I love her books!
Lynn 😀
Sweet. I know two from the list. Rebecca–loved it. and I’ve read a couple by Gaiman. Some hotties–I love it
Yep, plenty of hotties in the Trueblood series! Mind candy – or eye candy if you want to watch the HBO series instead!
Lynn 😀
compassion blossoms in the garden of your heart
I would pretty much recommend Rebecca to anyone. Great read. And like you I’m all over recommending Gaiman. I’ve given his books to soooo many different people and have consistently gotten positive reviews back.
I’m about 100% certain you got me into Gaiman in the first place and now I’ve just gone totally geekfest about everything he does! Currently reading the Sandman – I like these – they definitely are a demonstration of his darker side but they probably seem a bit more palatable because of the graphics (although they can be a bit, mmm, ghoulish!)
Lynn 😀
Overall Sandman has some great stuff which tempers the darkness to some degree. There are parts of the story I don’t particularly enjoy, but as a whole it is an amazing achievement.
I’m really enjoying The Endless. The volume I’m now reading gives an explanation for each of them which is really interesting and Dream is about to enter the underworld to bring back his human lover from the Kingdom of Hades (where he banished her to after she spurned him – talk about hell hath no fury like a woman!!)
Lynn 😀
Death and Delerium are my favs. Such great characters. If you get a chance to find it, snag the graphic novel Death:The High Cost of Living. It is a beautiful story.
Excellent – thanks for the tip! I’ll look out for that. Death is a great character – I quite like Destiny as well, very sombre.
