This week over at The Fantasy Review Barn we are travelling once again through the tropes of fantasy. This week’s topic is pets. I’ve decided to stick to our best friends. The canines!
Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden has a dog – Mouse. Quite the opposite as he’s something of a giant!
Kevin Hearne’s Druid Chronicles – Atticus the Druid has a dog called Oberon. Oberon is one of the best fictional dog characters EVER and has the funniest lines of the whole book – well, no, he doesn’t talk but Atticus and Oberton can converse telepathcially.
J K Rowling’s Harry Potter. Hagrid’s dogs – Fluffy and Fang – I think Fluffy was the three headed dog and Fang is the big black shaggy soft hearted critter.
Toto – The Wizard of Oz – not even going to give a name or description – don’t be pretending that you don’t know who Toto is or I’ll set the flying monkeys on you. Would have mentioned them as pets to the Wicked Witch but I’ve decided to stick with the dawgs!
A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs – John Carter finds himself with a very unusual dog like character called Woola – fiercely protective and with three sets of teeth quite a formidable character.
Honorary Mentions –
JRRTolkien’s LotR – Bill the Pony
Captain the cat from Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish because a vampire hunting cat is pretty cool
TOTO! 😀 This is awesome, great pick. I only read book 1 in Dresden Files, so I only know about the cat – I’m not sure if I want to continue, though…
Well, it might not be your thing but I felt like the Dresden Files improved with each book and the second one was definitely much better than the first in series.
Yay for Toto!
Lynn 😀
Hot dog! I recognized 6 out of 7 of your examples I’m so proud of myself *gives herself a cookie*
Haha, which one didn’t you recognise?
Lynn 😀
The Dire Wolves of Game of Thrones, though one could argue that the pets in those relationships are the humans and not the wolves.
Haha, nice one – yes, quite often I think it is the humans who are the pets – for example cats! Who is really the pet in a cat human relationship – if cats could talk they certainly wouldn’t agree to being called a pet – dogs are such simpler creatures.
Lynn 😀
Good choices. Detouring from dogs I would choose Hermione’s cat Crookshanks from HP and Oy the billy-bumbler from King’s Dark Tower series. I so want a billy-bumbler, when you read this series you’ll know why 🙂
I want a billy-bumbler now just because, whatever it may be, it’s a billy-bumbler!
Lynn 😀
I second the TOTO! Ofcourse! He’s like the most famous fantasy pet ever and he never crossed my mind. You are brilliant. Glad you focused on dogs (*whispers* because they’re the coolest).
I know – I almost forgot Toto too!
Lynn 😀
I have never read the Wizard of Oz books *blushes* although obviously I’ve seen the movies. I want to get around to them eventually! Good call though – I didn’t see anyone else remember him!
Well, Wizard of Oz is a book I read when I was about 8 believe it or not and I haven’t read it since! I’m surprised that Toto came to mind myself!
Lynn 😀
I wasn’t sure how you were gonna squeeze LOTR in there this week, but Bill is perfect. Now that I think on it, Fatty Lumpkin (Tom Bombadil’s pony) is another one! Lots of unsung equine heroes in LOTR.
Hello, I’m taking part at tugh travels for the first time 😀
I really should read the Druid Chronicles once, but as everything this might be an empty promise, because there are so many books I want to read 😀
I should have remembered Toto and Bill the pony! Shame on me 😛 Now that I’m reading all the lists I realize what I’ve forgot…
Haha, it’s easy to remember all the things you’ve forgotten once you read everyone else’s entries. I usually want to kick myself when i read the other posts!
The Druid Chronicles is a very easy to like series. It’s just plain fun and the one thing that definitely comes across reading it is that the author enjoys writing it! But, like you said, there are such a lot of books to read out there and you can’t possible read them all!
Lynn 😀
I stalled out on the Iron Druid Chronicle series after book 2 because I could only take Atticus in small doses, but I have to say the best thing about those books is definitely Oberon! Yes, greatest fictional dog ever!
Oberon is such good fun! I’ve not read past No.4 I think but I will probably read more at some point!
Lynn 😀
